The countdown to Million Mile Monday has begun. June 28 is now just days away. It’s hard to believe we’re embarking on the third Million Mile Monday.

This year our goal is every rider and every mile counts. Do we have a mileage goal? Yes (more on that in a minute), but more importantly we want everyone to get out and go for a ride. Do you have to go far? Heck no! Ride to work, ride to the dealer, ride to the bank, ride to the grocery store … well, you get the point.

Last year we heard from many members who said they didn’t think they could participate because they couldn’t ride lots of miles that day because of work and family obligations. I’m here to set the record straight. It’s not about riding lots of miles that day (if you can, that’s great). It’s about just getting on your bike and going for a ride. Whether it’s one mile, 10 miles, or 100 miles. Every mile counts. Here’s another thought: Instead of taking your car to run an errand, take your motorcycle. You get to go for a ride, run your errand, and participate in Million Mile Monday. So the “I don’t have time to ride far” excuse will not work this year because you don’t have to ride far to participate.

As a matter of fact, I can’t ride many miles that day. I wish I could, but like many of you I’ll need to work that day. However, I plan to ride to work that day rain or shine. And if everything goes well during the day, I hope to sneak out a bit early (hope the boss doesn’t read this) and take a short side trip to get some ice cream. If that isn’t possible, well then I’ll just ride home. I’ll still be doing my part to help us reach our goal.

What is our mileage goal? It’s five million miles logged. Can we do it? Well, that is up to you. Because we need every rider and every mile logged to reach our goal.

The question is, “Are you ready?”

  5. This is the message I’ve been trying to get across to my club – Deep South Kiwi Chapter, Dunedin, New Zealand. I say just go for a ride, I have on both previous occasions notched up some miles, but being the southern most chapter in the world means – snow, black ice, hoar frosts, even rain. But I still got the bike out and enjoy every arse clenching corner, no worse than riding on gravel. Looking forward too Monday, Dean Rask.

  10. Kent, Doug, and the Big O -

You do not need to sign up. Once you have ridden, log on to members.hog.com. Right on the Home page there will be a call out for Million Mile Monday. Click the link. You will be taken to a page. Follow the instructions (you enter the number of riders/passengers and then the number of miles per rider and the site will calculate the total. For example 2 riders/passengers x 20 miles = 40 miles total.)

One last thing – you have until Tuesday, June 29th at 3PM to log your miles. Remember it’s every rider and every mile counts!

    That’s it.

  16. Count me in again this year. I have to work, but plan to take the long way to work and a longer way home. I live on the Gulf Coast and with all the mess in the Gulf and all the bad news coming in each day, this is my escape. Last year I logged 101 miles just riding around the county before and after work. It may not have been a lot, but every mile was more enjoyable then the one before it. Screw it, let’s ride.

  42. Wow…we had a great ride with some friends in north western Wisconsin! We mapped a route to ride 5 Rustic Roads. Wisconsin has a program for cyclists to ride Rustic Roads and earn patches and a certificate. Go ahead and look it up here and map your next ride: http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/safety/vehicle/motorcycle/rusticroads.htm
Roads were beautiful and we logged 173 miles! When we were all done we settled into a Chinese place for some hungry riders! Thanks HOG…this is a great idea…we’ve ridden each of the million mile mondays!

will add some pics of us at the glacier overlook and at valdez plus one of big bob and I in front of the denali H/D shop at the end of the day ….. that will be tomorrow… we had serious rain and fog but we braved the elements like the crew we are…hydroplane anyone… Sharon broke in her new (new to her) road king, and Larry (LOWHOG) showed his style on his dyna .my softail needs a new rear . then theres big Bob am going to call him 82 mph from now on >>>need me to explain that lol who knew Bob could run like that…. not me officer

    Comment by Tom Starr — June 29, 2010 @ 1:52 am

  45. Why only count up to 1000 miles per rider? Ten of us in the West Texas Hog Chapter did an Iron Butt run of 1090 miles not counting miles from home to the start and finish. this cost a least 1100 miles. Just don’t understand.

    Comment by Luke Griffin — June 29, 2010 @ 4:55 pm

  46. Luke -

Thanks for the note. You can enter over 1,000 miles on the site you just have to break the mileage up into two entries. You could have entered 1,000 miles in one entry and then 110 in the second. We’ll work on having this be clearer next year. Thanks for the input. We limit the number of miles for two reasons. One is because people would enter numbers that are not realistic (i.e. 2000 miles) and to make the site work quickly to complete the calculations.
